The plight of patients with hyperoxia, SMA and other illnesses led to protests accompanied by "Israel Today" • The Basket Committee listened

The struggles of patients and their families, which were exposed in "Israel Today", led to seven new drugs and technologies entering the state drug basket yesterday - some very expensive (about one million shekels a year per patient), and some intended for rare diseases, causing disability and life-threatening.

For example, following the struggle of SMA patients, a genetic disease that causes severe disability and death at a young age, a third drug for the disease was added to the basket yesterday - "Risdiplam" by the pharmaceutical company "Roche" - with a budget of NIS 15 million. About 120 patients in Israel for the two drugs that have already been added to the basket in recent years, also after public and media struggles.

The struggle has been led in the past year by 22-year-old Liron Oded from Ariel, who struggled with Clalit Health Fund, which refused to fund the drug outside the basket even though the drug in the basket affected her.

The legal battle waged by Liron, through Adv. Yael Friedel of the Friends of Medicine organization, paved the way for the decision to put the new drug in the basket, which was done in only a few countries.

Another drug that has entered the basket is "Oxalomo", which is intended for the treatment of a rare genetic disease - primary hyperoxyluria, which affects Israel mainly in Druze and Arab children from some specific villages in the north of the country. The drug entered the basket, was budgeted at NIS 24 million and is intended for 24 patients a year. It should be noted that a week ago, in a very unusual move, the spiritual head of the basket committee approached the Druze community, Sheikh Moafek Triff, and asked to put the life-saving medicine in the basket.

Another drug that has entered the basket is "Gatex", for children with short bowel syndrome. About ten children will be able to receive the drug, and it is budgeted at about nine million shekels.

The basket committee also introduced the drug "Chrysoita" for adults, having already been included in the basket for children. The drug is intended for patients with osteoporosis, and is intended for about 20 patients with a budget of about NIS 12 million. Another special drug that was added to the basket this year, "Selenito", is designed to treat sleep problems in children on the autism spectrum. It will be budgeted at NIS 3.5 million, and is intended for the care of about 2,000 children. This is the first time it has been added to a basket specifically designed for those diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

After an ongoing struggle, the "artificial pancreas" was introduced this year, intended for juvenile diabetics aged 7-8 with unbalanced diabetes, with a budget of about ten million shekels, intended for about 850 children and adolescents with diabetes.

Another struggle revealed in "Israel Today" is the psychiatrists' demand to fund a special pacemaker implanted in surgery for severely depressed patients.
