What is the right way to create harmony in the home space? Are there any rules for an asymmetrical look? • Everything you need to know about perfect room design

The idea of hanging items correctly in space is based on creating harmony.

When the connections are not harmonious, the eye suffers and strives to fill in the gaps on its own.

This article will guide you on what to do and what not to do about it, but the most important thing is to trust your eye.

When the items hang harmoniously, your eye will know to tell you that, and you just have to listen to it.

Heights

Hanging at the wrong height can sabotage the entire look. Our eye is lazy, and she does not feel like trying to include something in her gaze. What enters her field of vision is in most cases at the correct height. This is a very important rule, but it also has a certain legitimacy. The bottom line of the space should be treated proportionally. In the absence of any other item blocking the field of view, the floor line will be the bottom line. If it is, for example, a picture to be hung in the dining area, the bottom line will be the end of the line of the armrests of the chairs. For those who pass by the dining area, the back of the chairs is the bottom line - and the floor becomes less relevant, because from where you look at the picture you do not see the floor. There is also a consideration of location: when it comes to a sofa, for example, the space between the decorative element that you want to hang on the wall and the back of the sofa must be larger.

It is important to make sure: the eye level, with a small deviation up and down, is suitable for hanging decoration on the wall.

It must not happen: hanging too low will create discomfort.

Think of a picture hanging over the couch where if you lean back, your head will hit it.

If you hang too high, a feeling of alienation will be created and the harmonious flow will be sewn up.

The correct height is 50-40 cm above the edge of the back of the sofa.

Power point

It is possible that what you are asked to hang on the wall will have only one element, which will be a kind of point of strength.

In this case - do not need anything other than the element itself.

It sounds like a simple task, but it must be very precise to create the right impression.

It is important to make sure: the element you have chosen as a power point must be proportional to the wall on which you want to fix it, one that will leave a space on both sides, and a larger space between the element and the ceiling and floor - but not excessively.

It must not happen: if the element enters exactly and without space, the feeling that will be created will be suffocated and stuck, while if it is too small it will look detached, as if it fails to justify itself.

symmetry

Symmetrical or asymmetrical?

It mostly depends on the taste, but you should formulate a position and produce a space accordingly.

The symmetry can be absolute, and it will be reflected in the distances on both sides, in the center of the element that is hung, and if it is marble - the stricters will ask for a matchbook layout, which will ensure that on both sides of the element the exact same pattern appears.

Sometimes, especially when it comes to a design with rustic elements, there are those who would like to mold into the meticulous symmetry a little nonchalantly, and this can be done without breaking the rules: if one chooses to hang two symmetrical images, each can be in a different pattern;

Or if it is a bedroom, a bedside table can be placed on one side and a flower pot or other element on the other, provided that all the other elements are symmetrically integrated in the space.

It is important to make sure: the symmetry must be as accurate as possible.

Be very careful about dimensions and distances.

It must not happen: a deviation, even the slightest, will damage the mirror.

asymmetry

There is a tendency to combine the asymmetrical look with something less binding, which is a wrong assumption. The asymmetric is just as accurate as the symmetrical. It throws the look out of balance, but in its way, it actually creates a new balance. When it comes to the bedroom, for example, you can hang the same light fixtures on both sides of the bed, only in a different number: if on one side hung three fixtures, on the other side you can hang a single fixture, or alternatively - five fixtures. In shelving systems you can play with the heights - hang two shelves close to each other and the third at some distance from them. It is important that the distance, even if it is large, corresponds with the distance between the first two shelves, for example double or triple distance. Also, asymmetry can come in the direction of hanging. If two shelves are hanging in a certain direction, the third can be hung in the opposite direction.

It is important to make sure: the asymmetric must be accurate.

It must not happen: if you perceive the asymmetric as a "cool mess" and not as a new balance creator, you will never be happy with the result.

The formal context

It depends on how your house is designed, but there is a great charm when choosing to hang a decorative element on a particular wall, which corresponds with another element in another space in the house.

One should of course make sure that there is eye contact between the different spaces: if you hung a rounded mirror in a certain color in the hallway of the sleeping area, on the dresser in the living room can stand an element that corresponds with the same look in terms of color, shape or both.

Another connection may be less direct, but equally strong.

A light strip with round fixtures, one of which stands out, corresponds with a rounded and prominent formal element with a decorative mirror, which hangs on the wall elsewhere in the house.

It is important to make sure: the element hanging in the background must be wide and large enough to produce a present and noticeable background for the item on the front.

It must not happen: the big element must always be behind, as a background, otherwise it will hide the small element and the connection between them will not be noticeable.
