If there is one thing that all experts agree on it is that you need to get vaccinated to fight the corona virus.

Yet one of the most common points of contention regarding Carona vaccines is the risk of myocarditis, especially among young people.

However, the latest data show that a significant number of patients hospitalized with corona have signs of heart damage, and many of those recovering from the disease are left with ongoing cardiovascular damage.

So what do the studies and numbers show about the corona, vaccines and the link to myocarditis, and is there an increase in cases following the emergence of new variants and multiple infections?

What is myocarditis?

A complication of myocarditis is a rare complication of viral diseases as well as coronary heart disease in all its variants, with 95 percent of the cases being a mild disease that goes away on its own.

"Inflammation is caused by damage to the heart muscle by infection or as a result of an overreaction of the body's immune system that attacks the body's cells. The disease has a wide range of clinical manifestations - from mild to life-threatening and very dangerous. Higher as a result of corona disease than as a result of the mRNA vaccine, "explains Dr. Maya Rosen, Clalit's Central District Medical Director.

Indeed, according to the data, before the corona entered our lives the incidence of myocarditis was between 1 and 10 cases per 100,000 people per year.

The highest rates were among men aged 18 to 30. Now, according to the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the risk of myocarditis after coronary heart disease is much higher, standing at 146 cases per 100,000 people.

The risk is higher for older men (aged 50+) and children under 16.

Myocarditis after vaccination

Contrary to what many opponents of the vaccine claim, coronary heart disease following a corona vaccine is rare, and the risk is much smaller than the risk of heart damage associated with COVID-19 itself.

A study conducted at the Clalit Research Institute in collaboration with Beilinson Hospital and based on an anonymous data analysis of 2.5 million Clalit patients vaccinated against corona examined the incidence and severity of myocarditis after receiving the vaccine.

The study found that the incidence of myocarditis after corona vaccination is rare even in the group at highest risk - young men.

Also, in the vast majority of cases the disease was detected and no significant effects on cardiac function were found.

The study found that the risk of myocarditis after vaccination is 2.13 cases per 100,000 vaccinated, which is in the most visible range usually in the general population.

This study is consistent with other studies in the US and Israel which place the overall incidence of myocarditis after vaccination between 0.3 and five cases per 100,000 people.

Does the increase in morbidity increase the cases?

"These studies mean that myocarditis is relatively rare after the vaccine compared to coronary heart disease. The chances of non-vaccinated people with coronary heart disease are almost four times higher than those who are vaccinated. "Relatively, and in other cases where cardiac function was evaluated after discharge, it returned to normal within a short period of time," says Dr. Rosen

. Is that we do not yet have data on that, "says Dr. Rosen.

"However, given the fact that most patients who suffered from myocarditis in the first corona disease were also patients who had previously suffered such inflammation after another virus, it can be concluded that they are still at significant risk if they start corona a second time."
