Total shipments of Champagne in 2021 amounted to 322 million bottles, an increase of 32% compared to 2020. This was announced by the Comité Champagne which brings together all the winemakers and all the Champagne houses.

The French market, according to the Comité based in Epernay, is growing by 25% with almost 142 million bottles, returning to the level of 2019; exports continue to grow with a new record of 180 million bottles. "This rebound is a nice surprise for the champenois after a 2020 that suffered (-18%) the closure of the main places of consumption and the absence of events around the world", commented Maxime Toubart, president of the Syndicat Général des Vignerons, co-president of the Comité Champagne, who is also satisfied with the "good performance of the national market ".

With the tourism and events sectors still limited by the restrictions due to the health crisis, it is safe to assume that domestic consumption has taken over. Consumers have decided to reward themselves at home, offsetting the concerns of the general climate with new moments of conviviality and sharing. Jean-Marie Barillère, president of the Union des Maisons de Champagne, co-president of the Comité Champagne, commented that "thanks to exports and consumer loyalty for the great cuvées, Champagne will achieve a record turnover of over 5.5 billion. euros ", but stresses that" the average of shipments for 2020-2021, 280 million bottles for 4.9 billion euros, remains below the pre-pandemic level (300 million bottles for 5 billion euros) ".

Affected by the health crisis in 2020 and the difficult climatic conditions in 2021, the Champagne region hopes that 2022 will pave the way for a new cycle of growth.
