A Taliban delegation will be in Oslo
from 23 to 25 January
to talk about the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and human rights.
This was announced by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry in a statement.
The Taliban will meet the Norwegian authorities and other allied countries and representatives of Afghan civil society, the statement said.
"We are extremely concerned about the serious humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, where millions of people are facing a major humanitarian disaster," said Norwegian Foreign Minister
Anniken Huitfeldt.
. "In order to be able to help the civilian population in Afghanistan, it is essential that both the international community and the Afghans engage in dialogue with the Taliban," he added. Stressing that Norway will be "clear" on some issues, in particular girls' education and human rights, Huitfeldt specified that the scheduled meetings "do not constitute a legitimation or recognition of the Taliban". "But we have to talk to the authorities who actually run the country. We cannot let the political situation lead to an even greater humanitarian disaster," explained the minister.
The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan took a dramatic turn since the Taliban returned to power in August and international aid stopped.
Famine threatens
23 million Afghans, or 55%
of the population, according to the United Nations, which has asked
for $ 4.4 billion from
donor countries to tackle the humanitarian crisis in the country.
