During the corona pandemic, significantly fewer children repeated a grade.

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office, in the 2020/21 school year 93,100 pupils repeated a class at general schools - either voluntarily or because they were not transferred.

That was 50,500 fewer than in the previous school year.

The rate of repeaters fell nationwide from 2.3 percent in the 2019/20 school year to 1.4 percent most recently.

According to the information, this was partly due to changed transfer rules.

»Due to the cancellation of lessons, alternating and distance teaching, special rules have been introduced in many federal states with regard to transfers.

In many cases, the transfer was no longer linked to school performance,” the statisticians said.

The rate fell in all federal states.

As in previous years, it was highest in Bavaria – 26,500 schoolchildren or 2.8 percent attended their class there again in the 2020/2021 school year.

The rate was lowest in Berlin, where only 2,500 students repeated the grade, less than one percent.

The transfer is regulated differently in the individual federal states.

58 percent of the repeaters were male.
