In the last four weeks, the number of people infected with Omicron has gone from 35% at the end of December to 80% in the last seven days.
This was announced by the Spallanzani clinical scientific team which systematically monitored the variants of SARS-CoV-2 in the last month.
The team also confirms that the "patient with the omicron variant is mainly outpatient and that the clinical impact of this variant is absolutely limited in its severity and this is due, as repeatedly stressed, to the ability of vaccines to prevent serious disease".
"The extreme contagiousness and consequent spread of the virus, however, confirms what has been repeatedly stated by this Institute about the need to continue the development of vaccines and their updating with respect to the variants that have so far been determined or that may arise", specifies the Spallanzani scientific team.
The Institute therefore "continues its research activity, also in partnership with national and international institutes, both for the updating of existing vaccines and for new vaccines that induce immunity to other targets of the virus, other than the spike protein" .
