More and more people are currently being infected with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
New surveys show where the risk of infection is greatest.
The highly contagious virus variant omicron is responsible for more and more coronavirus infections. In the first calendar week of 2022, 68,598 omicron infections were detected in Germany, as reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the leading biomedical research institution of the German federal government. And the numbers are likely to continue to rise. According to the Tagesschau, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns of a massive spread of omicrons.
The WHO even assumes that more than 50 percent of the population in Europe could become infected with omicron in the next six to eight weeks.
In the first week of 2022 there were already more than seven million newly reported Covid 19 cases in Europe, which more than doubled within two weeks,
tagesschau.de
quoted WHO Europe Director Hans Kluge as saying. The good news: According to the current state of knowledge, Omicron does not seem to be more dangerous than other mutants*. “
The risk of hospitalization to the emergency department with Omikron was only about one-third that with Delta
' according to a release by the UK Health Security Agency. A study of UK health data cited showed, according to the report, that "the risk of hospitalization for omicron cases is reduced after two and three doses of the vaccine, with the risk of hospitalization after three doses being 81 per cent lower than for unvaccinated omicron cases." .
However, the rapid spread of the highly contagious omicron variant means that more people are becoming infected in a short period of time than ever before.
Since the physical reactions to the infection vary greatly from person to person - some feel nothing, others have mild cold symptoms, others have to be treated in hospital - it is important to protect yourself as well as possible.
Especially with the Corona vaccination.
"
The COVID-19 vaccination is the safest way to build up protection against COVID-19," informs the RKI and, like most other health authorities, appeals for vaccination.

Avoiding so-called hotspots is also one of the important infection control measures. These are cities and regions that report particularly high corona incidences.
But do most people get infected there? An RKI survey provides answers.
In a table, the RKI shows reported corona cases that the health authorities have assigned to an outbreak (an event with two or more reported corona cases is classified as an outbreak). The cases are broken down by infection environment (setting), i.e. the location in which the infection* probably took place. At the request of

, the RKI said that there were many settings "in which outbreaks are difficult to recognize because those affected usually do not know the close contacts there."
In addition, only a rather small part of the number of cases is reported by the health authorities assigned, which also makes it difficult to pinpoint specific locations of infection ,

As can be seen from the RKI table, a total of 198,287 corona infections were reported in the 52nd calendar week (December 27, 2021 to January 2, 2022)
that could not be assigned to an outbreak and therefore to a location of infection.
The remaining cases recorded in the last week of 2021 were assigned to the following places of infection by the RKI:
Private households: 4,360
Retirement and nursing homes: 587
Diner/Restaurant: 161
Hospital: 132
Kindergarten/after-school care: 124
Workplace: 100
