Their story had moved the entire planet.

Munzir El Nezzel is a Syrian father whose leg was amputated following a bomb explosion in his country of origin.

Both had been photographed a few months ago in the Turkish city of Alexandretta, and their shot had been rewarded by the jurors of the prestigious Siena International Photo Awards (SIPA).

Munzir, his wife, his son and their daughter arrived in Italy on Friday.

They were supported and accompanied by the organizers of the Siena International Photo Awards to bring them from Turkey, where they had arrived after fleeing war-torn Syria.

The organizers had contacted diplomats, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and the Catholic diocese of Siena to welcome the Syrian family, reports the New York Times.

“We love Italy”

Like all countries, Italy can issue visas for humanitarian reasons, but refugees must be sponsored by a local organization that handles paperwork and provides financial support.

"We love Italy", rejoiced Mustafa on his arrival, smiling.

After two weeks of quarantine, doctors will be able to give them exams in order to offer prostheses for Mustafa's legs and arms and for his father's right leg, also indicates the Italian press agency Ansa.

Last November, the photographer of the famous iconic shot, Mehmet Aslan, confided in the Parisian.

“I met them by chance last January, and I was flabbergasted by their fate.

I came back a few days later to take this photo, just behind their house.

I naively thought that making their story public might help them get out of it, ”he said.
