Some large discounters are planning far-reaching changes for 2022.

With the implementation of the 5D rule, Aldi and Co. are also putting their competition under a lot of pressure.

Germany – With Aldi, the first discounter announced at the beginning of December that it would implement an important change in the product range in the coming year.

It is now clear that not only Aldi Nord and Süd are planning to convert their entire pork range to 5D by the end of 2022 at the latest.

As RUHR24* knows, Lidl, Penny and the supermarket chain Rewe will also be introducing the 5D standard next year.

5D rule from 2022: Aldi and Lidl are pushing ahead and changing the pork range

If someone rushes ahead, it often doesn't take long for everyone else to follow suit.

When it comes to animal welfare, it is now the discounter Aldi that wants to implement a new standard for the entire pork range.

With the introduction of the 5D rule, a clear sign for more sustainability should be set.

Because with 5D, all five steps of the pork production value chain should take place in Germany, i.e. birth of the piglets, rearing, fattening, slaughtering and processing.

Long animal transports of piglets and pigs could thus be a thing of the past.

After Aldi, Lidl also announced early on that it would only sell pork from German production.

According to top agrar

, Lidl wants to

be even faster than Aldi and start the changeover as early as the first quarter of 2022 - and even include processed sausage products.

According to top agrar

, Penny, Rewe and Kaufland

have already followed suit and also announced that they would switch their entire range of fresh pork to 5D in the course of 2022.

At Rewe, the supermarket that was recently convicted of a brazen meat scam*, it should be 95 percent of all pork products on offer that meet the 5D standard.

Aldi and Lidl will be using the 5D rule in 2022 – competition will follow if there is a change in the pork range

According to Watson

, with the early announcement of the change, the discounters and supermarkets want to

give everyone involved in the value chain enough time to adapt to the change (more news about supermarkets and discounters* on RUHR24).

It doesn't even sound that new to only offer pork from German production.

A lot of fresh meat is already coming from German companies.

What is new in this case, however, is that the entire value chain – from the birth of the piglet to the processing of the meat – is to take place in Germany.

Rearing, fattening and slaughtering also take place at 5D-Fleish in Germany.

So far, only the 4D rule has applied to many products in the pork counter: According to In Franken

, the piglets for rearing

often come from abroad.

"With our commitment to '5D' we are closing a gap and are once again committed to German agriculture," explained Tobias Heinbockel from Aldi Nord to the

Lebensmittel Zeitung

.

Aldi and Co.: Big changes in the fresh meat counter in 2022, and not just because of 5D

This should not only increase the importance of animal welfare, but also give the battered pig farmers a new perspective.

They had recently come under a lot of pressure due to collapsing world market prices and ever smaller profit margins.

The pioneers in 5D are now probably also hoping that even more companies will follow suit.

If the commitment to more sustainability is well received by customers, the “commitment to German agriculture” could in any case put pressure on competitors to follow suit.

Then another change could also find its way into all discounters and supermarkets.

As

Watson

reports, Aldi also announced that it would phase out levels 1 and 2 of fresh meat by 2030*.

Rewe with the discounter subsidiary Penny and Edeka have already joined.
