(ANSA) - MOSCOW, 23 JAN - Russia has recorded 63,205 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, or the third consecutive daily record, after the 57,212 infections on Saturday and the 49,513 infections of last Friday: the government announced today.

At the same time, Moscow - the epicenter of the epidemic in the country - also set a new record, for the fourth consecutive day, with 17,528 new cases.

Both the capital infections and those in the rest of the country are mainly due to the spread of the Omicron variant.

Government figures indicate 326,112 deaths from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

However, the Rosstat statistics agency - which bases its data on a broader definition of deaths caused by the virus - counts almost twice as many.
