Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court Judge Carmela Haft last night (Saturday) released David Oknin, a resident of Yehud, who was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of beating a doctor who treated his wife at Ichilov Hospital.

According to the suspect, Oknin allegedly assaulted the doctor because he suspected him of trying to start with his wife.

Following the incident, the hospital staff today held a demonstration of support for the doctor.

A post on Ichilov's Facebook page also published the words of the doctor who was attacked - Dr. Dotan, a specialist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

"On Saturday night I was attacked by a patient's husband and I inevitably write this post," the doctor first noted and began to elaborate on the incident.

"Last Saturday night, my fourth shift in the last eight days, after 15 hours of intensive shift, a patient arrived five months after giving birth due to abdominal pain.

"I asked to call another doctor for a consultation. I asked the patient and her partner if they could wait in the room until the doctor came for the consultation, and in the meantime I went to check other patients. After 15 minutes, when I saw the doctor was delayed, I went back into the room "Come and we'll go in to see her again. In the meantime, I moved to the next room to check on another woman."

"Do not believe it's a true story"

After a few minutes, Dr. Dotan said, he heard a loud explosion. "I thought someone had fallen outside and I immediately went out to see what had happened.

When I left the room and looked to the left, the patient's partner's partner came out of the next room and claimed that I had started with his wife and hit me in the face with tremendous force.

"After that, he continued to try to punch me, but I managed to escape from him while the spouses of other patients in the waiting room and the nurse caught him until the security guards arrived."

According to Dr. Dotan, it became clear to him that while he was in the next room, the suspect noticed a note on a desk containing the phone number of a doctor who had consulted him about another case. "He asked the nurse my name and she said to him: Dotan.

"He probably heard Yotam and concluded that I was starting with his wife and trying to pass the note to her with the phone number," Dr. Dotan wrote.

"Delusional and not believing it's a true story.

"At the end of the incident, after calming down and in the presence of the security forces and the police and realizing the big mistake, he apologized to me and said he did not know what happened to him and how he lost control like that. "The incident was addressed to me by the attacker's father and he apologized profusely on his behalf and on behalf of his son for the incident."

Dr. Dotan, who suffers from a nose injury following the assault, sought to convey a message through the post: “No matter what a person concludes, thinks or deludes - violence is never the way, violence only brings more violence and never brings a solution.

I chose to be a doctor to treat and save a life, I chose to be a doctor because in my eyes it is a profession where your intentions and the actions you do in your day to day life are always with the intention of doing good to others.

"I have many more years of medical practice ahead of me, but me and my friends - doctors, nurses and paramedical staff - can not continue to work under fear of violence of any kind, we deserve more than that."

Convicted of assault also in 2018

Following the incident, Oknin was brought to court last night for a hearing on extending his detention.

A police spokesman asked to keep him in custody for another five days.

He noted that Oknin has a conviction from 2018, also for assault.

The suspect's defense attorney asked the judge to release Oknin under house arrest at his father's home in north Tel Aviv.

As stated, Judge Haft ultimately decided to release Oknin under house arrest despite ruling that there was prima facie evidence of reasonable suspicion that the suspect had committed offenses of assaulting a doctor who was a public servant, intentional property damage and disorderly conduct in a public place.

She noted that the investigative actions for which a request for an extension of detention had been made could be made that he was released.

Police asked the court to delay the release decision to file an appeal, but the judge refused and ordered the release of Oknin.
