Protests against the Corona requirements in Brussels.
There were isolated riots in the Belgian capital on Sunday;
the police used tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators; six people had been arrested before the demonstration began for possession of dangerous or prohibited items.
According to initial estimates, tens of thousands of protesters had gathered in the city center, apparently including protest tourists from all over Europe.
Some of them recorded their visit via social media channels.
A group of participants threw wooden slats and other objects at the police officers;
some observers recorded further violent actions on social media.
Scenes of the protests were shared under the hashtag #PeaceFreedomSelf-determination: mostly people without face masks can be seen – and clear messages: With slogans against the corona vaccination and calls to “protect” children, the crowds, organized by various European groups, moved through the streets .
Once again, crude comparisons to Nazi Germany were not avoided.
As a precaution, the police had largely cordoned off the seat of the European Commission.
