(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 23 - Election day, today, in the self-proclaimed Republic of Northern Cyprus - recognized only by Turkey -, a vote dominated by concern for the economy and the consequences of the Covid pandemic.
At the end of an electoral campaign dominated by the lack of interest of the approximately 204,000 voters, almost all polls predict a victory of the Ubp, the National Unity Party of President Ersin Tatar, very loyal to the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and staunch supporter of a Cyprodivision permanently in two states .
A confirmation by Tatar, with a majority in parliament (which counts 50 seats), would therefore mean the end of any prospect of federal reunification of Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkish troops occupied the north of the island in response to a coup attempt supported by the military juntan at the time in power in Greece.
