Despite the corona: 2021 was a record year for Israeli hotel stays

2019 was the peak year in tourism in Israel, and despite the sharp decline in tourists who came to Israel, Israelis actually broke the record for overnight stays in hotels in Israel, which amounted to about 14.7 million overnight stays - an increase of 7% compared to 2019. The year 2021 was the "black year" of inbound tourism, when the hotel industry in Israel last year recorded a negative record in overnight stays and occupancy by foreign tourists, since the skies of Israel are closed to non-citizens for almost two years.

Data from the Hotel Association published today (Monday) show that the industry recorded a 93% decrease in tourist overnight stays compared to 2019, a 40% decrease in total overnight stays (tourists and Israelis) in hotels, and the average annual room occupancy in 2021 dropped to a low of only 39%. .

The difficult data sum up a period of almost two years and indicate the critical situation of the hotel industry in Israel.

Despite domestic tourism data, it is important to remember that the industry was almost completely closed in the first two months of the year.

Only on March 5, 2021 was the opening of the dining rooms approved with an occupancy of up to 50%, and on May 6, 2021, the occupancy restrictions were lifted and the hotels were allowed to work according to the green label.

The year 2019 was recorded as a record year in inbound tourism and overnight stays and occupancy of hotels with approximately 25.8 million overnight stays (approximately 47% tourist overnight stays and approximately 53% Israeli overnight stays) and an average room occupancy of approximately 70%.

Despite the non-arrival of the tourists, the Israelis actually arrived and how, and took advantage of the closures and everything in between for an Israeli vacation in the hotels in the country.
