The increased prices are causing problems for many consumers.
A new study shows how the burden of inflation is distributed across eight different household types.
Households* in Germany are affected by inflation
to varying degrees depending on their income and the number of household members
. This is the result of a study published on January 24 by the Institute for Macroeconomics and Business Cycle Research (IMK) of the Hans Böckler Foundation. Accordingly, prices rose in December for middle-income
families with children
and
for
middle-income
couples
without children
by 5.5 percent. The average value across all household types was 5.3 percent. "Middle-income families with children and middle-income couples without children currently bear the highest inflation burden," the statement said.

On the other hand,
single people with low incomes
had the lowest household-specific inflation rate of 4.4 percent, according to the IMK.
"Even for singles with high and middle incomes, the rates of 4.7 and 5.0 percent respectively in December were slightly below the general price increase." For family households with two children and low incomes, it was 5.3 percent, for families with higher incomes 5.4 percent.
The IMK intends to determine the inflation rates for eight representative household types on a monthly basis and publish them in a so-called inflation monitor.

How will consumer prices develop in 2022?
"We expect that inflation will weaken noticeably again in the current year," said Silke Tober from the IMK, according to the announcement.
Nevertheless, inflation is a burden on households in Germany.
Basically,
low-income households
have a particular problem because they mainly buy
essential everyday goods
and have little leeway to fall back on their savings.
