Whale Watchers Western Australia Meeting

In a heartwarming video circulating on social media in recent days, you can see a band of orcs trying to release a great-fin whale after it got entangled in ropes.

This is an unusual encounter, as it is known that the orca (rightly also called the killer whale) usually feeds on these whales - but this time the band did not take advantage of its weakness to attack it, but helped it escape and left it to its own devices.

Eyewitnesses from the nearby ship were stunned by the orc's response to the rare incident that occurred on January 10 this year off the south coast of Western Australia, near Bremer Bay.

These told the Mandurah Mail that they were "afraid of the worst" when they spotted the band of orcs swimming towards the trapped whale.

When the whale seemed tangled in ropes, it seemed to become a snack for the notorious predators, who often also attack and kill large white sharks.

Eyewitnesses were stunned when they realized it was in fact a rescue attempt.

Gemma Sharp of the Whale Watchers Group of Western Australia said: "A large fin whale will usually be part of their diet, so when we saw the injured whale and the approaching orcas, we were very worried."

After he was released from the ropes - the orc trio lost interest in him and continued on their way.

A statement from Western Australia's Whale Watchers read: "We could see that this large fin whale got entangled and our heart sank. It's a horrible situation to be in when you try to protect yourself from the big predators of the ocean. "Suddenly something amazing happened, when the lump of green rope that the whale got entangled in floated behind him."

The statement added that it is also unusual for a large fin whale to roam Western Australia at this time of year, as this species spends time in Antarctica.
