Christina of Spain, sister of King Felipe VI, and her husband Iñaki Urdangarín decided "by mutual agreement" to "terminate their marriage relationship".
The news agency Efe reports.
The two were married in 1997.
The news of the separation between 'the infanta' - second child of King Emeritus Juan Carlos and Queen Emeritus Sofia of Greece - and her husband comes after, a few days ago, the Iberian magazine 'Lecturas' published some photos that immortalized Urdangarín hand in hand with another woman, Ainhoa Armentia, a colleague of the law firm where she works.
"These things happen, we will face the situation in the best possible way", he said, besieged by reporters in the following days.
Urdangarín, a former handball player then sentenced in 2018 to over five years in prison for a corruption case (while his wife, initially involved, was acquitted), is currently serving his sentence in a regime similar to semi-release in the Basque city of Vitoria .
Cristina is instead resident in Geneva, Switzerland.
The couple has four children, towards whom the commitment of both "will remain intact", according to the statement released by the EFE.
