58 German tourists died in the Austrian mountains last year.
A total of 272 people died, as reported by the Board of Trustees for Alpine Safety.
That's a little less than the long-term average.
Most of the victims died of cardiovascular failure.
Other major causes of fatal accidents are falls.
According to the board of trustees, the restrictions caused by the corona pandemic were particularly noticeable in the number of injuries, which fell significantly to almost 5,000.
In general, more people were injured in summer than in winter.
A total of 18 people lost their lives in 130 avalanches.
At the beginning of January, a German skier had a fatal accident in Austria.
According to the police, the woman fell on a red – i.e. moderately difficult – slope in the Wilder Kaiser ski area in Tyrol.
On the hard, slightly icy slope, she was said to have slipped around 200 meters down the valley and crashed head first into a safeguard on the edge of the slope.
The 45-year-old, who was traveling with a group of five, suffered fatal head injuries, police said.
