How long does the protective effect of a vaccine last?

A question that researchers around the world are currently investigating.

Now it was compared again what protects better: infection or vaccination.

An Israeli study already suggested at the end of August 2021:

A corona infection* probably protects better against the delta mutant than a complete vaccination with the Biontech vaccine

.

During the investigation, a team of researchers led by the immunologist Sivan Gazit evaluated data sets from tens of thousands of people, as reported by the editorial network Germany (RND).

The figures were from the Israeli health insurance company Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS).

The data was collected between June 1 and August 14, 2021, at a time when the delta variant had already spread across the country, the RND said.

A new US study also shows that recovered corona patients are better protected against Delta than vaccinated and not recovered people. The French news agency AFP informed about a publication by the US health authority CDC. According to this, the study authors had analyzed the data of US citizens from New York and California, a total of 1.1 million people who had tested positive for Corona between May 30 and November 30, 2021. A key study result:

Where vaccination resulted in stronger immunity than corona infection before the advent of the delta variant, the ratio shifted when the delta variant became widespread at the end of June

.

As a result, people who had not been vaccinated but recovered were found to be better protected against reinfection than those who were vaccinated but not recovered.

Study causes a stir

Infecting with corona without being vaccinated increases the risk of life-threatening courses

However, deliberately letting yourself be infected with Corona is the worst possible decision.

The problem of infection when there is no vaccination protection: The risk of a severe course of the disease increases*.

The reason for this is that our organism has usually not had any contact with the pathogen Sars-CoV-2, which can result in an overreaction of the immune system.

The risk of a so-called cytokine storm is increasing.

In the case of immunization with a corona vaccine, on the other hand, components of the virus that are harmless to humans (vector vaccines/inactivated vaccines) or only the construction instructions for corona antibodies (mRNA technology) are administered.

As a result, the body produces antibodies against Covid-19, which allows it to react more robustly to the virus if it is actually infected.

Against this background, according to the AFP, the authors of the US study warned against relying on the infection as an immunization strategy. Unvaccinated people who were not previously infected would have a

higher risk of hospitalization, long-term consequences and a fatal infection

than vaccinated people , as the

Salzburger Nachrichten

portal quoted the AFP report, among other things.

A whole series of scientists advocate not misinterpreting the study results: "

We don't want people to say: 'Okay, I should go out and get infected, I should organize an infection party

'", the editorial network Germany quoted Michel as saying Nussenzweig, an immunologist at Rockefeller University, who explained this in an interview with Science magazine.

According to the RND, Marion Pepper, an immunologist at the University of Washington, also speaks out against intentional infection with corona viruses: The study shows the advantages of natural immunity, “but does not take into account what the virus does to the body at this point to reach".
