Study, childcare, donations: As a rule, a partial repayment beckons when the tax return is submitted.

Gardening is also tax deductible.

Regardless of whether you are a homeowner or renter: gardening work can be claimed for tax purposes – under certain conditions.

Anyone who is now looking for the receipts from their last visit to the garden center can be stopped:

Material costs such as purchased plants cannot be deducted from tax

.

However, there are a number of gardening activities that can have a tax-reducing effect.

You can deduct gardening work in the tax return as

household-related services and as handicraft services

- up to 5,200 euros per year.

However, not every garden work* can be claimed for tax purposes.

These works in the garden can be declared in the tax

Are you a passionate hobby gardener?

It doesn't matter whether it's in the garden of your own home or on the terrace of a rented apartment: If you give your green thumb free rein,

you can get money back from the state.

The Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (mdr) provides information about activities that can be stated in the tax return:

  • Garden is newly laid out or redesigned (unless it is the garden for a newly built house)

  • Tree felling work that is commissioned

  • Service provider mows lawns, fights pests, trims hedges or clears paths

  • Craftsmen create garden or swimming ponds, repair something, lay turf or paving stones or erect a garden wall or fence

  • Labour, machine and travel costs, consumables (e.g. cover foils, cleaners)

  • Disposal costs charged by a company

Important to know: As household services and handicraft services, the above items can only be deducted from tax if the garden is part of a complex that is occupied by yourself.

According to the mdr, this also includes holiday apartments and allotment gardens in which one could live.

Also relevant:

Always ask for a receipt when you pay service providers and craftsmen in cash or transfer the amount

.

Many tax offices only recognize the costs mentioned in the tax return if the proof of payment in the form of a receipt or a transfer slip with a suitable account statement is attached to the corresponding invoice.
