Actress Kathryn Kates has died at the age of 73.
Her agency calls her a "real icon" on Instagram.
She loved her craft.
"She will always be remembered and honored in our hearts as the strong force of nature she was," it says.
According to information from the US broadcaster CNN, Kates died as a result of lung cancer in the presence of her family.
Kates, born in New York in 1948, started her career in Los Angeles, according to her website.
There she first took part in various theater productions and was a founding member of the Colony Theater.
This was followed by various roles in US television series such as »Seinfeld«, »Matlock« and »Judging Amy«.
She starred as Amy Kanter-Bloom in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black.
Kates has also appeared in the drama series The Good Fight and as Judge Marlene Simmons in five episodes of the series Law & Order.
In a lyrical farewell post on her Instagram channel, she read: »Keep me in your beautiful hearts with unforgettable memories.
Teach others what you have learned from me and I will live forever.«
