Guillermo del Toro's previous film won him an Oscar • In his new film "Nightmare Alley," which hits theaters tomorrow, stars Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett • "Today I have complete creative freedom," he says

Four years after his previous film, "The Shape of Water," was the grand winner at the Oscars, Mexican director Guillermo del Toro's new film, "Nightmare Alley," starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, will hit theaters tomorrow.

The film is a cinematic adaptation of a novel written by William Lindsay Grisham.

The book had already received one cinematic adaptation in 1947.

At the center of the plot is a charismatic man with a mysterious past named Stanton "Stan" Carlisle (Cooper), who finds work in a circus in the late 1930s.

He makes a close connection with the fortune teller Xena (Tony Colette), appropriates the skills of a mentalist and leverages his success while creating a scam that he cooks together with a psychiatrist (Blanchett).

"Nightmare Alley" is considered one of the most talked about films of the current ceremonial season, and was even included in the list of the ten best films of 2021 by the American Film Critics Committee (the film was released in the US in December).

Del Toro, 57, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, is known as a director of fantasy and horror films.

His films include adaptations of comic book heroes such as "Hellboy" and "Blade 2", and science fiction films such as "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Pacific Rim".

He is considered one of the three "Amigos" - three Mexican filmmakers who have enjoyed tremendous success in the last decade: Alfonso Cuarón ("Gravity"), Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu ("Birdman") and Del Toro.

His 2017 film "The Shape of Water" brought him the coveted Oscar.

Like many films, the production of "Nightmare Alley" was delayed because of the Corona, and at the same time Del Toro began work on his next film, which will air on Netflix later this year.

It is a musical animated adaptation of "Pinocchio", with the voices of Ewan McGregor, Christoph Waltz and Ron Perlman (who became a close friend of Del Toro, and also stars in "Nightmare Alley").

After a screening of the film in Los Angeles a few weeks ago, Del Toro said with a smile: "30 years ago, Pearlman approached me and suggested we do 'Nightmare Alley.' Without much experience in show business, we went to a meeting at Fox Studios. They said that the book had already been adapted into a film, they sent us out and asked us to evacuate our vehicles from the parking lot. But the book went with me all those years, until three years ago I felt it was time to do it. It's right to do it. "

On the filming during the Corona, Del Toro said: "The tragedies we experienced in the plague only helped sharpen the responsibility we have to return to work. We must continue to exist in the world. I had a moment when I realized what a privilege it is to mess with other stories, to distract people from the plague."
