"Unprecedented" levels of infection in Omicron:

The Intelligence Department's report published today (Thursday) on coronary heart disease in Israel shows that during the first three weeks of January, more Israelis became infected with corona than in the past year.

Throughout 2021, about 960,500 people of all ages were verified, and in January 2022, so far, about 1.160 million Israelis were verified.

Against the background of the increase in morbidity and the unprecedented number of patients, experts in the Corona Knowledge and Information Center warn that a calculation made according to the prevalence of PIMS in children, as was the case in the Delta Wave, may affect 200-100 children in the coming weeks.

It should be noted that only yesterday four cases of PIMS syndrome were reported in children hospitalized at Kaplan, Haemek and Soroka hospitals.

The prevalence rate of PIMS has so far been defined as one case per 30,000 infected.

In 2021 and until the start of the Omicron wave on December 21, some 300,000 unvaccinated children aged 18-0 were verified - leading to at least 220 diagnoses of PIMS syndrome in Israel.

In the six weeks of the current wave of illness, about 440,000 children of these ages were vaccinated, of whom about 250,000 were unvaccinated (vaccination reduces the risk of developing PIMs syndrome by 91%, according to studies, so unvaccinated children are at higher risk) and latent morbidity levels are estimated to be higher. Previous discoveries.

"If the incidence rate of PIMS in the population following the Omicron strain is similar to its average rate in previous wave waves, there may be 200-100 children who will suffer from the severe phenomenon in the coming weeks.

The coefficient of infection (R) today stands at 1.16 and has been on a downward trend in the last two weeks.

However, the report explains that "the decrease in the coefficient of infection is not equal to the decrease in morbidity, but reflects a more moderate increase in the rate of increase in the extent of morbidity."

The coefficient of infection reflects a doubling in the daily number of verified, about 73,000, every 12 days or so.

"Such a decrease in the coefficient is expected at high morbidity levels and does not reflect a real slowdown in the spread of the morbidity."

The percentage of positive tests in recent days stands at 20.3% (one in five positive tests).

It is estimated, however, that the new testing policy that allows for home testing downplays the calculation.

"This is a particularly high percentage of positive tests. And reflects the existence of widespread undetected morbidity. At the same time, it is important to understand that this index is affected by the new testing policy," the report notes.

Among travelers abroad, who are all required to be tested, regardless of the new policy, the positive percentage is 11.5%.
