It could be the technological comeback of the year: the Canadian software manufacturer BlackBerry wants to conquer the mobile phone market with a new smartphone - complete with the legendary keyboard.

Waterloo/Munich - For years it was quiet around the former mobile phone giant BlackBerry.

The company from Waterloo, Canada, was one of the pioneers of modern communication in the early days of the smartphone. The striking design with the physical keyboard looked like it had fallen out of time compared to the numerous iPhones.

This is precisely why BlackBerry lost touch with Apple and Co. many years ago, but it also retained a large fan base.

Now the company wants to get back into the limelight and announces a comeback on the smartphone market.

BlackBerry: 5G smartphone to herald a comeback

Together with OnwardMobility, a Texas-based technology company, BlackBerry plans to launch a 5G smartphone with the Android operating system later this year.

In addition to all the usual functions, the striking keyboard is also set to make a comeback.

While all major manufacturers rely on touchscreens and integrated rows of letters, BlackBerry wants to win the hearts of previous customers with its return.

BlackBerry had already announced its cooperation with OnwardMobility in 2020, and the Texans in particular had their eyes on the return to the competitive smartphone market: A 5G cell phone should have been offered last year, but the project was delayed.

Fans of the brand have been waiting for a new BlackBerry smartphone since the release of the

BlackBerry Key2 LE

in August 2018.

More details will be given shortly.

Just a few days earlier, BlackBerry had made an “End of Life” announcement for its classic devices from BlackBerry 7 to BlackBerry 10.

BlackBerry: keyboard as a selling point - is that enough?

The only open question is whether the return of the well-known keyboard will attract enough customers to the shops.

The prospects for this look rather poor, after all there are numerous reasons why the rows of letters and numbers have disappeared from modern hand-held telephones altogether.

Psychic keyboards not only make cell phones thicker, but also lead to a smaller screen, which ultimately affects the viewing experience when playing multimedia and surfing the Internet.

Both points are crucial for the success of Apple products.

Another aspect that speaks against a traditional keyboard is due to the use: Unlike a touchscreen, the keys are hard and firm, so one-handed typing or swiping gestures would no longer be possible.

An alternative solution could be a fold-out keyboard, but this would make the cell phone thicker again.

However, fans of the cult brand will have to wait a little longer before they can take a look at the latest BlackBerry smartphone.

Above all, it will be interesting to see how the Canadians solve the "keyboard problem".

Either way, many cell phone fans should look forward to the comeback.
