The child supplement increased on January 1, 2022 – but only slightly.

The traffic light coalition has announced further measures to support numerous families.

The

child allowance

, a benefit in addition to child benefit for

low-income families

, was increased slightly at the turn of the year.

On January 1, 2022, it rose by EUR 4 from EUR 205 to EUR

209 per month and child

.

The Federal Employment Agency provides information on its website, among other things, that the child supplement is calculated for each child individually.

“They receive a maximum of 209 euros per child per month.

If there are several children, a total amount is paid out.”

Entitlement to child allowance?

The child supplement is intended to help parents to make a living.

But not all families are

entitled

to it.

Families: basic child security is coming – what does the coalition agreement say?

Critics say the increase doesn't go far enough.

What else is planned for the future to support low-income families?

In the coalition agreement, the SPD, FDP and Greens had agreed on

basic child

security.

It is planned that with such basic child security, previous financial support services such as

child benefit

and

benefits for children in Hartz IV households

will be bundled.

The basic child security should primarily relieve families with little money, it said.

Many questions still remained unanswered.

According to a report in the

Handelsblatt

(as of December 16)

, Federal Minister for Family Affairs Anne Spiegel (Greens) announced that the working group agreed in the coalition agreement, headed by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, would be set up at the beginning of 2022 to get

basic child security

off the ground.

"She has to solve difficult questions at the numerous interfaces between the different services," Spiegel is quoted as saying in the report on

handelsblatt.com

.

"It will certainly take some time."

Children's immediate bonus for families announced - family minister explains the plans

The Federal Minister has also announced an

immediate bonus for children

from low-income families, as the editorial network Germany (RND) reported in early December. The

immediate surcharge

is intended to benefit recipients of

Hartz IV

social assistance

 or

child allowance

until the traffic light coalition implements its more comprehensive project of basic child security, the German Press Agency (dpa) described on the occasion of the report on the plans at the time. The immediate surcharge planned by the traffic light parties for children in poorer families should be

staggered by age , according to Spiegel

will.

"We will still determine the exact amount," explained the Federal Minister for Family Affairs in the interview with the RND.

When asked whether the surcharge should be 10 to 25 euros per child and month, she replied: "It's going in that direction." According to her, 2.7 million children in Germany would benefit from it.
