The thieves climbed up scaffolding: Unknown persons broke off and stole the hour hand of a church tower clock in Kranenburg, Lower Rhine.
To do this, they climbed about 50 meters, as the police announced on Friday.
Apparently they failed when attempting to remove the large hand as well.
This was left damaged, according to the parish website.
The police suspect that the perpetrators were after the metal of the clock on the Catholic Church of St. Martinus.
Pastor Jörg Monier was initially unable to explain the theft.
"Maybe they just wanted a souvenir," he said.
The police are looking for witnesses.
