(ANSA) - MILAN - One million non-performed oncological diagnoses and 56% fewer HIV diagnoses than in the previous three years. These are just some of the negative effects of the pandemic on no Covid patients only for 2020. This is what emerges from the study by The Bridge Foundation with the University of Pavia, Intexo and Simeu, presented during the meeting "The impact of the pandemic on patients no covid ". Another phenomenon encountered was that of overcrowding in the emergency room, mainly due to the access block, i.e. the condition that occurs when the exit from the emergency room of patients, assessed as needing hospitalization, is delayed for more than eight hours. precisely because of the lack of availability of places in an ordinary ward.

During the first wave of Covid-19, there was a decrease of about 40% in the volume of patients who accessed the emergency room compared to the previous year. On the other hand, as regards the time required for the diagnostic-therapeutic process, they increased as patients were much more complicated to manage, requiring longer and more complex therapies and monitoring. As regards the economic impact of the pandemic on national health expenditure, in 2020 it grew to 123.4 billion (+ 6.5%, where between 2012 and 2019

"The study showed how the health crisis has highlighted the limits of the Italian health system, mainly attributable to the linear cuts in spending in recent years."

commented the president of The Bridge Foundation, Rosaria Iardino.

"This pandemic has shown the weakness of the 'logistics' of the national health system: the internal management of hospitals with the various containment measures has penalized other wards invaded by Covid patients" added Alessandro Venturi, professor at the University of Pavia.
