The body scan

According to the sportsman, this technique would be borrowed from the military and would make it possible to fall asleep even in an uncomfortable environment.

In concrete terms, it consists of lying down with your arms along your body, relaxing, gradually “turning off” all the parts of your body, one after the other.

"Start from the muscles of your forehead, then release your eyes, cheeks, jaw and focus on your breathing," says Justin Agustin in his video.

This step passed, the imagination comes into play. The coach invites you to practice what is called a "body scan", or in French, a body scan.

Clearly, we review the entire body, from top to bottom, imagining with precision the circuit of a warm sensation, starting from the head to the end of the fingers.

Then repeat with the lower body.

It would then suffice, according to the coach, to think of two scenarios.

“You are lying in a canoe, on a calm lake, with nothing but a clear blue sky above you.

You are lying in a black velvet hammock in a dark room,” says Justin Agustin.

If the mind is trying to move on to other waters, the coach recommends repeating to yourself for ten seconds “don't think, don't think, don't think”.

Six weeks of training

The theory is attractive, but what about its effectiveness in practice? If the athlete assures that the method is effective on 96% of people who master it, the psychiatrist and somnologist Nelly Guichard is a little more reserved. "It is true that the technique of mental imagery works relatively well to find sleep, because it allows you to decenter yourself from your anxiety-provoking thoughts," she comments. It is particularly used in the practice of meditation or sophrology. "But not everyone is receptive to relaxation methods," continues the psychiatrist.

The order that we would give ourselves not to think, to force our mind not to wander during relaxation, also seemed vain to her: "It is useless to try to silence thoughts, we are always thinking of something thing, reminds the doctor.

Rather, prefer to redirect them to other positive images, sources of relaxation.

If the psychiatrist is finally skeptical about the promise of record time to fall asleep and praised by the coach, she indicates however that the method can work provided you train.

In his video, Justin Agustin recommends practicing it every day for at least six weeks.

Try it tonight at bedtime.
