The aim of the corona booster vaccination is to increase vaccination protection against severe Covid courses.

It recently became known how useful which booster is after the J&J vaccination.

The corona booster vaccination or "the booster": The second or third syringe with corona vaccine is currently occupying many citizens.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) recommends such a booster vaccination against Covid-19 for all persons aged twelve and over

. But when? According to the Federal Ministry of Health, adults should be boosted about three months after the second mRNA vaccination, and adolescents three to six months after the second Biontech or Moderna vaccination.

In the case of the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, the Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) even recommends a second vaccine dose with an mRNA vaccine from about four weeks after vaccination.

The reason for this recommendation: Study data would point to

“inadequate primary vaccination protection” after a single vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson preparation

indicate, it is said of the

time

according to the October STIKO statement.

In January 2022, the Federal Center for Health Education (BzGA) said: "Johnson & Johnson's vector-based COVID-19 vaccine Janssen® is effective and safe.

However, current studies indicate that a severe course caused by the Delta variant can only be prevented up to 70 percent with a single vaccination (complete vaccination protection) with Janssen® from Johnson & Johnson.

This reduction in effectiveness was not shown in connection with the Delta variant with the other approved vaccines".

In addition, most vaccine breakthroughs have been observed in individuals who have achieved full immunization coverage with a single shot of Johnson & Johnson's Janssen®.

Not fully vaccinated after a Johnson & Johnson vaccination

The result:

After a one-off Johnson & Johnson vaccination, citizens are no longer considered fully vaccinated

.

The vaccination status "fully vaccinated" is only obtained if one is vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine at least four weeks after the initial J&J vaccination.

"In order to be considered boosted within the meaning of the 2G-Plus regulation, three vaccinations are now also necessary for vaccinations with Johnson & Johnson," according to the BzGA.

But which booster is the right one?

Moderna best booster?

In a study, researchers at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam addressed the question of which booster is most effective after Johnson & Johnson immunization.

In the analysis, which was published on the specialist portal

The New England Journal of Medicine

, the data of 434 healthcare workers were evaluated.

These had received the initial vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson product.

The booster vaccination was either again with the vector vaccine or the mRNA vaccines from BioNTech/Pfizer or Moderna.

The conclusion of the authors, as informed by the portal

Springermedizin

: Both a booster with the vector vaccine itself and a booster with an mRNA vaccine were associated with sufficient immunogenicity.

The best immunity was achieved with Moderna's mRNA booster.

As recommended by the Vaccination Standing Committee, Johnson & Johnson vaccinees should have the mRNA vaccine booster dose

three months after the second dose of mRNA vaccine

.
