The employment rate of women in the 15-64 age group in the South "dropped to 33%" against an employment rate of 59.2% in the Center-North and 63% in the EU-27, or 30 points behind the rest of Italy and Europe.
This was revealed by the Confcommercio Study Center in a report on the South and the Pnrr on data for 2019, in which it is emphasized that even in Calabria the employment rate of women fell from 31% in 2007 to 30.3%.
The participation of women in the labor market in the South is "absurdly low", says Confcommercio.
"If the spending of foreigners in the South alone had the same incidence as in the North-West in 2019, the GDP of the South would have been about 1% higher".
This was revealed by the Confcommercio Study Center in a report on the South and the Pnrr, adding that "if" the southern GDP "reached the share of the Center, it would be almost 10 billion euros higher" (+ 2.5% real at 2015).
Confcommercio revises its GDP estimates for this year downwards: from 4% estimated in December to 3.5-3.7%.
The data was anticipated by the director of the Confederation Studies Office, Mariano Bella, during the presentation of a report on the South and the Pnrr, explaining that the official data will arrive in the coming weeks.
The government currently expects growth of 4.7% this year.
"The Covid crisis has further weakened the South in terms of employment, productive capital and income. With the Pnrr it is possible to recover the lost ground through almost double the public investments which, if addressed quickly and well, will also attract huge private resources by strengthening the tourism supply chain. Only in this way will we be able to ensure robust growth not only in the South but for the entire country ".
This is how the President of Confcommercio, Carlo Sangalli, comments on the analysis of the Confederation's Studies Office on Pnrr and Sud released today.
