Time spent raising children can be counted towards the pension.
Find out here what benefits mothers and fathers are entitled to.
Anyone who has children needs a lot of time to lovingly accompany them as they grow up.
However, this also reduces the working time.
The result: parents not only receive less or no salary at all - they
also automatically pay less into the pension insurance
.
The pension* is reduced significantly, especially for women, who still do the lion's share of raising children.
The good news: child-rearing periods can be counted towards your pension.
You can find out how here.
Who is entitled to parental leave?
Almost all parents (including adoptive, step- or foster parents) who have cared for their children
in the first 30 or 36 months after the birth
of their offspring are entitled to child-rearing periods.
An exception applies to mothers and fathers who, as employees subject to social security
contributions, earn a particularly large amount
.
Their pension does not increase as a result of raising children.
The reference value is the contribution assessment limit of the statutory pension insurance (per month 7,100 euros in the west and 6,700 euros in the east).
Incidentally, this does not apply to
self-employed
top earners such as doctors or
lawyers
.
Parents who are already drawing their pension are also no longer counted by the pension insurance.

Are both parents entitled to parenting leave?
The pension entitlements for bringing up children exist only once per child, for one parent.
However, parents can split up the child-rearing periods.
as a rule, it is awarded to the person who primarily takes care of the child.
How do I get a pension for raising children?
Parents must apply for their child-rearing pension for this to be taken into account.
The corresponding form is called V0800 and can be downloaded from the pension insurance.
Parents can theoretically take their time until retirement.
However, an earlier application is advisable in order to be able to better estimate the expected retirement benefits.

How much does the child-rearing period increase my pension?
"The period of raising children increases the pension about as much
as if the mother or father had earned an average income after the birth
and paid contributions together with an employer," reports Stiftung Warentest.
If parents work during the accrual period, the pension points will also be credited to them.
For children born before 1992, the parents are credited with 30 months of parenting time and rewarded with
2.5 pension points
.
For children born after 1992, 36 months of parental leave are credited - there are
3 pension points for this.
The pension increases accordingly.
Stiftung Warentest calculates:
Pension supplement for children born before 1992:
Number of Children | east | west |
1 child | 84 euros | 85 euros |
2 children | 167 euros | 171 euros |
3 children | 251 euros | 256 euros |
4 children | 335 euros | 342 euros |
Pension supplement for children born after 1992:
Number of Children | east | west |
1 child | 100 | 103 |
2 children | 201 | 205 |
3 children | 301 | 308 |
4 children | 401 | 410 |
By the way, child-rearing pension and mother's
pension
are two different things.
The latter merely refers to the increase in the credited child-rearing period for children born before 1992 from 12 to 30 months today.
