Karnataka's public schools and colleges will remain closed for the next three days to ease tensions raised by last week's ban on wearing the hijab in the classroom.

Today, in various schools across the state, demonstrations have been held that have degenerated into clashes between students and police, who used batons to disperse them.

Governor Basavaraj Bommai, who is in Delhi to meet various federal ministers, in a tweet called on students, teachers and school leaders to maintain peace and harmony.

"We decided on the dress code in compliance with the Constitution and the education law of our state," he added.

"We too are awaiting the sentence of the High Court called to decide on the appeal of the six students who first refused the request to remove the veil".
