The story of this sordid road trip held the United States in suspense at the end of last summer: Gabrielle Venora Petito, a 22-year-old American with an angelic face, who went as a couple to discover the American West, crossed the died in the guise of her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, 23.

Gabrielle, who called herself Gabby, shared everything on social media: her joys, her van trips and her love with her fiancé Brian, with whom she had recently moved to Florida.

The young woman will also share her tragic end.

It all starts like a romantic comedy.

Gabrielle and Brian decided to cross the United States for four months aboard their converted van.

A kind of honeymoon for the two young adults, recently engaged.

Gabby, who dreams of becoming a "van life" vlogger, decides to trace the stages of their journey on social networks and on a website.

The police intervened

After a last visit to the family of the young woman, the couple sets off from Blue Point in the state of New York, at the beginning of July, towards the parks and natural reserves of the West of the United States.

On Instagram and YouTube, Gabby introduces her followers to her trip and the landscapes of Kansas, Colorado and Utah.

The sets are magnificent, the couple is smiling.

Not a cloud in the blue sky.

But in the desert landscapes of Utah, a shadow draws near: On August 12, a Moab city police patrol checks Gabby and Brian's van after a witness reports a possible incident.

The police officers are then faced with a tearful Gabby.

The young woman explains that she argued with her companion, who confirms this altercation.

The police are not worried and advise the couple to separate for one night to get some air.

The newly engaged couple's honeymoon takes a turn.

The couple meet again and then spend several days in Salt-Lake City.

Gabby, who frequently checks in with her family, calls her mother on August 24 before hitting the road again with Brian.

This will be the last time Gabby's mother will hear her daughter's voice.

A last photo is posted the next day on the young influencer's Instagram account, then no news until August 30 and a text message sent from Gabby's phone, simply stating "No network in Yosemite".

But is the young woman still alive at this moment?

The fiancé returned to Florida alone

At the beginning of September, Brian returns alone to Florida, without any explanation.

On September 11, Gabby's family issues a missing persons search warrant.

The FBI is seized, but it is a whole country which leads the investigation.

The Petito affair becomes a series of suspense interspersed with distress messages from the young woman's relatives and clues collected and shared by Internet users.

For the police, Brian becomes a “person worthy of interest for the investigation”.

But questioned by investigators, the young man does not provide “any information” and is walled in silence, on the advice of his lawyer.

On September 13, it's Brian's turn to disappear.

Six days later, the body of a young woman is discovered in Bridger Teton, a forest in Wyoming.

This is Gabby's body.

The young woman was strangled.

Suspect #1 Brian is still nowhere to be found.

On October 20, human remains were discovered in a Florida nature preserve alongside items belonging to Brian.

His identity is confirmed by his dental records.

The autopsy confirms that he committed suicide with a bullet to the head.

At the end of January 2021, a new twist finally closed the case: the FBI confirmed Brian's involvement in Gabby's murder.

The man left a letter in which he confesses to the murder of his fiancée.
