For more than two years the corona plague has been dictating the world agenda and affecting society and the economy in an unprecedented way.
On the one hand, we have advanced in understanding the virus and developed ways of coping - mainly through vaccines, medications and careful handling, such as wearing masks.
On the other hand, the corona surprises us every time and changes its face - from the original virus, through the delta strain that causes severe disease and the more contagious omicron, to (at this point) BA.2, which is even more contagious than its father, the omicron.
The response of governments and health systems in the world is much slower and more hesitant than the virus, and the steps they are taking in their fight against the new variants are outdated and no longer relevant.
The first component is strengthening the health care system.
The Israeli government must define the future attribution scenario for the health system.
If the government decides that it needs to prepare for the treatment of 4,000 seriously ill patients, as emerged from the national exercise to deal with the omega variant, it must provide the health system with the necessary beds and standards.
The second component is the vaccines, which must be available to all.
In addition, a licensed vaccine plant must be established in Israel, which will allow us to advance the world in the development and production of customized vaccines.
A third component is the full availability of free antigen and PCR tests to the public, to make it easier for the public to maintain their health and prevent infection, and to continue to encourage careful conduct - wearing masks as a protective measure for the general population, and the elderly and immunocompromised in particular.
A fourth and no less important element in the future dealings with the Corona is the establishment of a national information system that will speak to the public at eye level.
