(ANSA) - PALERMO, 07 FEB - The statue of the Goddess Athena arrives in Palermo from the Acropolis Museum in Athens, which will be exhibited for four years at the A. Salinas Regional Museum.

Accompanying the precious find, dating back to the 5th century BC, will be, for the occasion, the Minister of Culture and Sport of Greece, Lina Mendoni, and the director of the Athenian Museum, Nikolaos Stampolidis, who will entrust it to the Sicilian Region, to the presence of the regional councilor for cultural heritage and Sicilian identity, Alberto Samonà, and the director of the Salinas Museum, Caterina Greco.

For the occasion, the Undersecretary for Culture, Senator Lucia Borgonzoni, will be present.

The delivery and presentation to the press of the sculpture are scheduled for February 9, at 11 am, at the Antonio Salinas Regional Museum.

As part of the Palermitan visit, Minister Mendoni will be received at Palazzo d'Orléans by the President of the Sicilian Region Nello Musumeci, and at the Royal Palace by the President of Ars Gianfranco Miccichè.

The assignment for four years to Salinas of this remarkable archaeological find is one of the fruits of the close cultural collaboration agreement wanted by the councilor Samonà with the Greek authorities.

On the basis of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two museums, last month the fragment of the Parthenon frieze (the so-called "Fagan find") arrived in the Greek capital, which from the Salinas Archaeological Museum reached the new Acropolis Museum in Athens.

A moment, which was celebrated in the presence of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The headless statue of Athena, 60 centimeters high, is in Pentelic marble.

It represents the goddess, dressed with a peplum marked by a belt worn on her waist.

It is the first time that from the famous Athenian museum arrives in Sicily, for a long-term exhibition, an original testimony of the history of the city that has profoundly marked, with its art, the entire Western culture.

The permanence in Palermo of the sculpture belonging to the collections of the Acropolis Museum constitutes the starting point of the synergy started between Sicily and Greece: a turning point, which will have positive effects on the regional cultural offer, thanks to initiatives that will be organized jointly between the Acropolis Museum of Athens and the Salinas Regional Archaeological Museum of Palermo, such as conferences, exhibitions, scientific research.
