46 percent of job advertisements in retail are online for longer than two months on average.
Employees are also in short supply in IT and engineering jobs - with consequences.
The shortage of skilled workers is currently a key challenge for many industries and companies.
This is also reflected in the fact that the period for filling vacancies is noticeably longer and
job advertisements are simply advertised permanently
.
Against this background, the job site
Indeed
has examined which job advertisements were particularly often online for longer than two months in 2021.
The result: The retail sector apparently had the greatest challenges in filling its vacancies and was constantly on the lookout for new staff* - even in the health or IT sectors, the proportion of job advertisements that were online for longer was not that high.
The retail trade searches across all positions
According to the Indeed analysis, an average
of 46 percent of all retail advertisements remain online for more than two months
.
This puts the occupational category at the top by a clear margin in this regard.
91 percent and 56 percent of job advertisements in managerial positions, such as retail business administrators and deputy branch managers, remain online for longer than two months.
But according to the analysis, food sellers are also particularly difficult to replace.
After all, 67 percent of the job offers for this profession remain vacant for more than 60 days or are permanently advertised.
Even for less qualified positions such as those for sales assistants, this proportion is 41 percent.
professional categories | Percentage of job advertisements online longer than 60 days in 2021 |
retail trade | 46.50% |
Banking & Finance | 38.30% |
Food preparation, manufacture, sale & gastronomy | 37.80% |
engineering | 35.00% |
software development | 34.30% |
IT support, IT infrastructure | 33.90% |
management | 33.70% |
mechanical engineering | 33.50% |
Civil Engineering | 32.90% |
Data analytics, information management | 32.80% |
project management | 32.40% |

However, the retail sector is not only struggling with challenges at management level, the same challenges are also emerging among young people: 91 percent
of training opportunities for retail clerks specializing in food
are online for more than two months, 88 percent of training places for salespeople and butchers are too 87 percent.
Here, the shortage of skilled workers begins with the next generation.
It is not for nothing that grocers such as Edeka, Netto, Lidl and others advertise for their offspring with elaborate campaigns.

skilled trades are also visibly affected by the shortage of skilled workers
: The job advertisements for sprinkler fitters (78 percent), concrete and reinforced concrete workers (63 percent) and foremen in building construction (58 percent) are online for significantly longer than those for engineers.
Of the job advertisements for
engineers
and
IT specialists
, an average of 40 percent of the offers for industrial engineers remain accessible longer, in the IT area it is between 32 and 34 percent, depending on qualifications and professional profile.

Desperately looking for intensive care nurses
Compared to retail, the proportion of job advertisements that are online longer is rather low in the nursing profession.
The average is only 26 percent.
However, the proportion varies greatly according to qualification: in the case of job advertisements for geriatric care assistants, the proportion is only 21 percent, but in the
case of nurses for intensive care it rises to 46 percent of the cases
and is therefore just as high as in retail.
“The job market in Germany really exploded last year – and with it the shortage of skilled workers.
We currently have
almost 50 percent more vacancies in this country than before the corona pandemic
," says Dr.
Annina Hering, Economist at Indeed Hiring.
“While this is good news for job seekers, it poses major challenges for companies when it comes to hiring.
The situation has become particularly acute in bottleneck areas such as retail, crafts and care.
This can be seen, for example, in longer filling times for open vacancies, which can be measured, among other things, by how long positions remain online.
Employers will
need to improve their offerings and increase recruiting efforts this year
, in order to win over the younger generations in particular,” says the expert.
