Until the beginning of the 21st century, cancer is classified according to the organ in the body where the tumor was diagnosed, and based on these data, patients with cancer in the same organ received the same treatment, even though two people with "the same" cancer will respond differently to the same treatment.

23 years ago, just before the US Food and Drug Administration approved the revolutionary drug Herceptin, Dr. Lior Shoshan-Gutman recognized the potential of personalized medicine and founded Oncotest. Aiming to help tailor the most accurate treatment to any cancer patient.

Do people know the concept of personalization in the context of cancer?

"Absolutely yes, but it's still not enough.

This is a revolution that has been going on for more or less 20 years.

What has happened in the last two years since the Ministry of Health recognized the fact that there is a real need to treat cancer patients according to the genetic characteristics of the tumor,

What is personalized medicine?

"Once the treatment is tailored to the patient, even if someone chooses to take chemotherapy in the afternoon. It is customized medicine, but we try to be more precise in the treatment according to the genetic characteristics of the tumor and the patient. In the last decade a new field has developed called molecular pathology. "In a certain organ, but if we take for example 100 people with lung cancer, and no matter what age, we can find changes in DNA and each such change is a completely different disease. Therefore, the treatment is also completely different."

Have people who have been treated with personalized medicine experienced significant improvement over others?

"Yes, absolutely yes and there are studies that prove it. It does not happen in all types of cancer, but the cancer in which the most significant drama was made is lung cancer. There we see a jump from six months to three years or more. This is not about recovery, but about life extension and benefit ".

What tests are required?

"Until five or six years ago, it was necessary to sample the tumor itself and characterize it. Then, a few years ago, a new technology came in that allows the tumor DNA to be sequenced, to learn it from a blood sample. The technologies have become so sensitive that all DNA can be sequenced. Found ".

If I want to know I'm fine, can I ask for a blood test to check this?

"The first technology has already hit the market and we estimate that within a year it will also arrive in the country. This technology is able to take a blood test, and locate something that has just started. We want to take a blood sample and know what cancer it is and at what stage it is."

What other conclusions have emerged in recent years?

"We actually understood who not to treat - the name of the most serious impact. True, it helps that the treatment can be targeted, but it is true for certain cancers. The big drama is in tumors such as breast, colon and prostate cancer. If the disease is detected early in these cases, it can Consider not giving chemical treatment. "

How are these innovative tests tested?

"It is already a routine and there is no need to ask for it. Yes it is important to read and know, the patient himself or the family members, so as not to miss the information. But yes there are technologies that have entered the treatment routine. "For me, every woman who has been spared chemotherapy, I do something good. It's true that it's very scary, but you have to first understand the stages, what the tumor is and more."
