Officially 3357 meters high, Mount Etna in Sicily is the largest active volcano in Europe: on Thursday evening it spat out lava fountains, three streams of glowing rock flowed a few hundred meters down the mountain.
A column of smoke of around 8000 meters rose into the sky, as announced by the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
According to the information, no more lava came out of the volcano on the Mediterranean island on Friday morning.
However, ash continues to flow out of the crater.
Operations at Catania Airport, at the foot of Mount Etna, have not been disrupted.
Etna has erupted several times in the past year.
In the surrounding villages and towns, the ash caused trouble and minor damage.
Air traffic at Catania Airport was also repeatedly interrupted at the time.
