It is generally accepted in these climes that Valentine's Day goes back to the story of Saint Valentine of Terni.

This is often referred to as the "father of Valentine's Day".

Its history probably takes place in the 3rd century.

The then bishop of today's Terni in the Italian province of Umbria died as a martyr, although it is not certain whether Saint Valentine was really just one person or whether the legends about him are made up of several people.
