The third booster may seem to many in Israel as something very far away, but around the world the third vaccine is in progress.

According to two studies published this week by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on the subject, Pfizer & Moderna's third booster is safe and they offer high levels of protection against severe coronary heart disease.

The problem - the defense fades over time.

But how long?

Evidence for the declining protection of boosters and vaccines in general "reinforces the importance of reconsidering other doses to maintain or improve protection against Covid-19-related hospitalizations and emergency department visits," says one study.

Another study found that the boosters also provide the best protection against the Omicron variant.

The first study published in the CDC's Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report examined the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing hospitalizations of corona patients in the emergency department and emergency room visits among adults in the United States who were vaccinated with two doses or received a third dose of the booster vaccine.

The data included 241,204 emergency or emergency care visits and 93,408 hospitalizations in 10 countries between August 26 and January 22.

The data showed that the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing emergency room visits and hospitalizations was higher after the third dose than after the second dose but waned over time.

With the dominant omicron variant worldwide, vaccine efficacy stood at 87 percent when it came to preventing access to the corona emergency department or emergency visits and 91 percent in preventing hospitalizations in the two months following a third dose.

It dropped to 66 percent and 78 percent, respectively, in the fourth month, the data shows.

After only two doses of vaccine, when the omicron variant was already the most common strain in the population, the effectiveness of the inpatient vaccine dropped from 71 percent in the two months after vaccination to 54 percent in five months, the study found.

Among the recipients of the third booster during the period in which the Delta variant was dominant, the efficacy of the vaccine against Covid-19-related hospitalizations decreased from 96 percent two months after vaccination to 76 percent at least 4 months later.

Overall, "These findings underscore the importance of receiving a third dose of vaccine to prevent access to the emergency room and corona hospitalizations in adults," the researchers wrote.

The second CDC study analyzed booster vaccine safety data reported to the Federal Government Vaccine Event Reporting System between September 2021 and February 2022 among 721,562 adults who received a third vaccine.

The study found that booster doses of corona vaccines remained safe, and those who received the same type of vaccine in all their vaccines tended to suffer fewer side effects after the booster dose than after the second dose.
