After the birth of your child, parents can compensate for the missing income with parental allowance.

With the parental allowance, mothers and fathers can secure financial support from the state* after the birth of the child to compensate for losses in earned income.
Good to know: Parental allowance can only be applied for after the birth of the child.
In addition to the

parental allowance , there is also the
parental allowance
plus and the
partnership
bonus , which can be combined with each other.
Where is the parental allowance applied for?
Parental allowance is applied for at the
relevant parental allowance office at the child’s place of residence
.
In the federal states of Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia, the parental allowance application can also be filled out online via ElterngeldDigital.

At present, however, the application still has to be printed out after it has been filled out and sent in paper form to the responsible parental allowance office.
So far, purely
online submissions
have been possible in Bavaria, Hesse and Saarland, among others.

Apply for parental allowance: the forms of the federal states
In order to receive parental benefit, you must use the
application form for your state
.
The form can also be taken directly from the parental allowance office or often from the municipality or from health insurance companies.

What additional evidence is required for the parental allowance application?
Depending on the federal state and personal circumstances, parents must enclose additional evidence and documents with the parental allowance application.
You can usually find out what these are in the main application form for parental allowance in your federal state.
As a rule, the following documents are required
:
Completed application form (signed by both parents)
Child's original birth certificate or birth certificate
Copies of the identity cards of both parents or a copy of the passport with residence permit and registration certificate
last income statement of both parents
Additional evidence for employees
:
For mothers: wage and salary slips for the last 12 months before the month in which maternity leave begins.
For fathers: wage and salary slips for the last 12 months before the month of birth.
Certificate from the health insurance company that you are receiving maternity benefit after the birth
Employer's certificate of subsidy to maternity benefit after the birth
In the case of part-time work during parental leave: confirmation of working hours by the employer
Parents may have to fill out additional forms and send them to the parental allowance office.
