(ANSA) - STRASBOURG, 16 FEB - "In order to achieve the climate objectives set by the Commission, a more rapid deployment of offshore renewable energies is necessary by improving and expanding existing infrastructures".

Thus the report on the situation of off-shore renewable energy approved today by Parliament with 518 votes in favor, 88 against and 85 abstentions.

In the text, MEPs stress the importance of "shortening the procedures for obtaining a permit and call on Member States to establish a transparent process and consider introducing time limits for issuing permits where necessary".

The text also recalls "the importance of NextGenerationEu as a unique opportunity to mobilize capital, in addition to private investments, to develop infrastructures".

Regarding environmental concerns, MEPs stress that "offshore wind farms can benefit marine biodiversity if they are designed and built in a sustainable way, but they must coexist with other activities, such as fishing and maritime transport".

"We need a lot of green electricity to achieve our climate goals and the offshore renewable energy strategy is absolutely essential to this," said Danish MEP Morten Petersen (Re), rapporteur on the text.
