A young woman poses as a wealthy heiress and thus gains access to New York's high society: A true story that Netflix has now filmed.

The "Anna Delvey" case caused a sensation in 2017.

Russian-born Anna Sorokin was on trial at the time because she stole a lot of money from hotels and private individuals under a false name.

A film-ready story that ended tragically in a prison sentence of several years.

Now the story of the 31-year-old impostor has been produced by Netflix* – in the form of a nine-episode mini-series.

The focus is on the German Anna Sorokin, who poses as a wealthy heiress and entrepreneur.

Her demeanor ensured her entry into some of the city's most elite social circles.

The scammer was not short of business ideas: She is said to have told investors that she was planning a "Soho House-like club" that would also function as an art space.

What nobody suspected at the time: the young brunette was neither wealthy nor an aspiring entrepreneur.

The young woman financed her luxurious lifestyle by misleading not only wealthy acquaintances, but also banks and hotels.

This is how the scammer was able to pay for her stay in a luxury suite at the Soho Hotel 11 Howard in Manhattan for quite some time.

But when the unpaid hotel bills piled up, Anna Sorokin was flown out of a few hotels in Manhattan and some of her friends also became suspicious because the young woman had not paid off her debts, the showdown ensued:

In October 2017, Sorokin was arrested after months of investigation by the public prosecutor , including grand theft, wire fraud, fraudulent loan applications and non-payment of bills

.

In April 2019, the case culminated in the US portal

According to townandcountrymag.com

, in a court ruling, Sorokin was sentenced to four to 12 years in state prison.

At the time, many people followed the story of the impostor.

And the story is still captivating today - not least in the form of the new Netflix mini-series "Inventing Anna".

As soon as she appeared, she was already number 1 in the German Netflix Top 10.

The imposter in the series is played by the US actress Julia Garner, who also has a role in the series "Ozark".

As reported by

Spiegel

, Netflix paid Anna Sorokin a whopping $320,000 to film her story.

However, the money has long since gone, as

Der Spiegel

quotes the 31-year-old as saying.

She paid around $198,000 in compensation, with the rest going to legal fees.
