A 51-year-old man from Saxony insulted the virologist Christian Drosten as a “Nazi war criminal” – and was therefore fined.
The Chemnitz Regional Court confirmed a corresponding judgment by the Döbeln District Court, as a court spokeswoman said.
The court had sentenced the man to a fine of 1,350 euros for insult.
He had appealed against this.
This has now been rejected by the District Court.
Drosten is director of the Institute for Virology at the Charité in Berlin and has also become widely known outside of specialist circles in the course of the corona pandemic.
Comparison with Adolf Hitler
According to the court, the convict from the Mittelsachsen district had compared the scientist to Adolf Hitler and the concentration camp doctor at the Auschwitz extermination camp, Josef Mengele, in two emails to the Charité in 2020.
In addition, he is said to have written that Drosten belongs in court and that a death sentence would be "legitimate".
According to the information, the decision of the Chemnitz Regional Court is not yet final.
