The life of the stewardess of Virgin Atlantic (Photo: Virgin Atlantic)

It is certainly not easy to manage hundreds of passengers on a plane, and it is a rather complex task.

While flight attendants make this process easy and "transparent", they are not: they must control all aviation safety secrets, and sometimes even identify certain features and characteristics among the many passengers (sometimes, even before these passengers board the plane itself).

To facilitate the complicated craft, the air crew members have their own “secret language,” which helps them communicate on each and every flight, and get through it safely.

On top of that, they even send each other secret signals, using tools hidden from view.

What does blue light symbolize?

Here are some fascinating examples: What appears to a regular passenger as an "exit" sign is certainly a standard exit sign, but at the bottom end of that sign is a small communication panel called an ACP (Area Call Panel).

Mataus Mashchinsky, a flight attendant quoted on the Travel and Leisure website, says that on your next flight, try to pay attention to the lights on this board, which allow flight attendants to know when it is necessary to take care of such and other matters throughout the aircraft.

According to him, if a blue light appears on the ACP panel, it indicates that a passenger presses the call button in his seat (sometimes the ACP has a pair of blue lights, to let the flight attendants know which side of the aisle that passenger is sitting on).

Flashing orange light: Does anyone smoke in the bathroom?

The appearance of an orange light lets the flight attendants know that something is going on in the airplane services.

Permanent orange light means that someone in the bathroom has pressed the call button.

If the orange light is blinking, this indicates that the smoke detector has been activated.

At the same time, a light bulb will also be lit outside the relevant toilet cubicle, so that the air crew members know exactly which cabin it is.

And finally, pink light is the way air crew members signal to each other that there will be a phone call to be answered.

Constant pink light means it is a one-on-one conversation, while a flashing pink light indicates that it is a group conversation, and the entire stewarding station should join the conversation.

In addition, sometimes a red light on the ACP panel may indicate a call from the front of the aircraft.

For each of these illuminated signals, a ring will also be sounded to signal staff members to check the ACP nearest to them.

Although these light codes are universal, there may sometimes be slight changes in this "language of light", depending on the specific passenger aircraft manufacturer.

In short, on your next flight, you can try and impress the flight crew with this information, on the various codes that appear under the departure signs on the plane.
