Covid-19: here are the new rules recommended by the EU for the entry of travelers from third countries

To this end, the member countries of the European Union (EU) have agreed to welcome more travelers from third countries, if they are vaccinated against Covid-19 or cured.

A recommendation that will begin to apply on March 1 was adopted by EU affairs ministers on Tuesday.

These rules, which are however non-binding, have been updated due to the evolution of the pandemic, the increase in the rate of vaccination and the administration of booster doses, as well as the recognition of a growing number third country certificates equivalent to the EU Covid certificate.

The recommendation provides that “Member States should allow non-essential travel for people vaccinated with an EU or WHO-approved vaccine, recovered people, and all people coming from a country on the list of the EU," according to the statement from the Council of the EU.

A PCR test may be requested in the event of a vaccine not recognized by the EU

For people vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) but not by the EU, Member States may however also require a negative PCR test, as for people who have recovered after contracting Covid-19. 19.

Vaccinated persons must have received a second dose at most nine months before their arrival, or have had a booster dose.

Recovered persons must have contracted Covid within 180 days of their trip.

No need for vaccines for travelers from 14 countries.

The list of countries from which travelers can come to the EU, even unvaccinated, currently includes fourteen countries (Bahrain, Chile, Colombia, Indonesia, Kuwait, New Zealand, Qatar, Peru, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, United Arab Emirates and Uruguay China is also included, subject to reciprocity of such a measure (which is not yet the case).

The text adopted on Tuesday provides that countries can appear on this list, which is regularly updated, if they have a number of Covid cases of less than 100 per 100,000 inhabitants during the last 14 days, and a weekly screening rate of 600 for 100,000 inhabitants.

The Commission will be responsible for reviewing the situation by April 30, and removing the list if necessary, in order to maintain a purely individualized approach.
