Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others from a fatal course of the corona virus.
The immunization also has a positive side effect.
Anyone who is vaccinated with the corona vaccines approved in Germany reduces the risk of contracting the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen.
Anyone who falls ill despite immunization can expect a much milder course of the disease, according to health authorities such as the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
Although side effects are possible, the benefits outweigh the risks of the approved vaccines
from Biontech/Pfizer, Astrazeneca, Novavax, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna, the RKI said.
A new study recently uncovered a positive side effect of vaccination.
A German-Dutch research team published the results of their vaccination study in the
journal
Clinical Infectious Diseases .
They conclude:
Corona vaccinations also protect against some cold viruses and thus reduce the risk of colds.
Would you like to get an overview of the side effects of the corona vaccination that have been reported so far? The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) as the Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedical Drugs records all reported suspected cases of side effects or vaccination complications in connection with the vaccination. In the current PEI safety report, you can find out how frequently headaches and heart muscle inflammation have been reported so far.

Corona vaccination also protects against severe Sars courses
As the researchers around Frank Kirchhoff from the Institute for Molecular Virology at the University of Ulm inform, the corona vaccination can "offer a certain cross-protection against endemic seasonal corona viruses".
Background:
The family of corona viruses is very large
, Sars-CoV-2 as the trigger of Covid-19 is just one representative of these viruses
.
There are also much more harmless corona viruses, around a third of all typical and usually harmless colds are caused by so-called conventional human corona viruses (hCoV), as the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research informs.
Vaccination with approved corona vaccines therefore protects against infection with cold corona viruses.
According to the German Primate Center, these include NL63, OC43, 229E and HKU1.
These are widespread worldwide and usually lead to mild respiratory diseases, it is said.
"
On average, vaccination significantly increased neutralizing activity against true hCoV OC43, -NL63, and -229E,
" said the study by Kirchhoff and team, published Jan. 25, 2022.
A corona vaccination also offers protection against the Sars-CoV-1 pathogen, according to the study authors.
Infection with this coronavirus results in severe acute respiratory syndrome.
Sars-CoV-1 is considered to be the trigger of the SARS pandemic in 2002/2003
.
"Vaccination against Sars-CoV-2 led to efficient cross-neutralization of Sars-CoV-1 but not of MERS-CoV," the study authors said.
