MILAN - Titian and the image of the woman, who is bourgeois, royal, goddess, saint or heroine.

Milan opens 2022 in the name of art with the exhibition entitled 'Titian and the image of women in the Venetian sixteenth century', promoted by the Municipality of Milan in collaboration with the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna which will be open from tomorrow, February 23 and up to June 5th.

The exhibition, curated by Sylvia Ferino, former director of the Kunsthistorisches Art Gallery, presents over a hundred works of which 47 are paintings, 16 by Titian, many of which are on loan from Vienna, in addition to sculptures and objects, such as jewels.

The famous contemporaries of Titian, such as Giorgione, Lotto, Palma Il Vecchio and Tintoretto, also tell the image of women in that era with their works.

"

The woman for Titian is the most important creation in the world - commented the curator -, the beauty of painting means the beauty of the woman.

For me Tiziano celebrates woman, admires her, always makes her strong, individual, beautiful and sometimes divine.

I believe that today's women should study women well as he painted them to always make themselves strong, beautiful and important.

Titian can be said to be an ante litteram feminist. "The women portrayed are ladies of the Venetian bourgeoisie, or royal figures, then there are the 'beautiful Venetian' real women or presumed such portrayed in half-length and strongly idealized. With often low-cut dresses. their showing their breasts is not a symbol of unscrupulousness but signifies the openness of the heart, an attitude of truth and sincerity.

Then there are the heroine women like Lucrezia, Giuditta or Susanna who represent honor, chastity, courage and sacrifice, or Mary Magdalene in her phase of penance.

Finally, the mythological figures such as Venus who is born from the sea like Venice and personifies the city.

The exhibition already promises to be a success given that over 35 thousand visitors have booked to admire it.

"A fact that comforts us after two years of pandemic - commented the Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Milan, Tommaso Sacchi - and it is an important fact and already in itself we are talking about a pre-opening success".

On display you can admire the portrait of Eleonora Gonzaga della Rovere, the Madonna and child, Isabella d'Este in black, the Young woman with a plumed hat arriving from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Venus, Mars and Love.
