If the rejection tumbles into the house after an application, the disappointment is great.

We show what reasons can lie behind it.

Applicants put a lot of time and effort into their

application documents

to impress recruiters and land their dream job.

Unfortunately, CVs, cover letters and references are not always well received – the application* is rejected before an interview has even taken place.

Unfortunately, employers rarely give a reason for the rejection.

Therefore, in the following, we show which reasons can lie behind a rejection of the application documents.

The perfect resume: content, structure and absolute no-gos.

1. Errors in application documents

As banal as it sounds: If the cover letter or CV is full of spelling mistakes, it doesn’t leave a good impression on HR managers.

After all, they are looking for employees who will do their job carefully and prudently.

Typing or grammatical errors quickly cast doubt on the suitability of the candidate.

In fact, it's also the most common reason for job rejection, as revealed by a previous survey of HR professionals in the US.

Tip:

Always have a second person read your application documents, preferably in printed form.

This way you won't miss any mistakes.

2. Parts of the application documents are missing

Have you submitted a cover letter and CV as requested, but you simply can't find your last job reference?

Then you shouldn't just leave this uncommented.

Prestigious companies in particular, which are blessed with many job applicants, sort out candidates immediately if their application documents are missing.

Missing work references also give the impression that applicants want to

hide a bad reference

.

If it really cannot be found, lost work references can be requested from the old company.

Application documents should always be error-free – otherwise there is a risk of job rejection.

3. Qualifications do not match the job

As illogical as it may seem for applicants,

overqualified candidates

are often quickly eliminated from the application process.

Employers fear that applicants will soon become bored and quit the job soon.

If your qualifications generally do not match the job description, other applicants with the relevant previous experience have a better chance of being invited to an interview.

4. Salary expectations unrealistic

"Please submit your application documents, stating your salary expectations" - this request brings beads of sweat to the forehead of many applicants.

After all, it is important to carefully weigh up your desired salary and what the company is still willing to pay.

Exaggerated salary expectations quickly mean the end of the application process.

But even a noticeably low amount raises questions - for example about the candidate's self-confidence or his qualifications.

Tip:

Inquire on salary portals about the market salaries for the respective industry and position, or talk to (former) colleagues.

You can read in this article* how to correctly formulate your desired salary in your cover letter.

5th position is already taken

Sometimes applicants are simply too late: the application phase for the position has already expired or the job advertisement is out of date.

Some jobs are only advertised pro forma – and have long since been assigned internally.

In this case, of course, you are not to blame for a cancellation.

Asking for reasons for the rejection of an application – this is what the answer could look like

If you want to find out the real reasons for your application rejection, experts advise simply

asking the relevant contact person politely

, like this:

"Dear Mr./Ms. Mustermann,

Thank you for your feedback on my application.

I'm sorry that you don't see an opportunity for a collaboration at the moment.

Nevertheless, I would like to take the opportunity to ask about the reasons for your decision.

So I have the opportunity to improve myself.

I would be very grateful to you for that.

I am looking forward to your feedback."

The answer can help you to ensure that your next application may result in an invitation to an interview.
